The Season That Reminds Us to Let Go
There is a point every autumn when the trees seem to change almost overnight. One day there is still more green than anything else, and then suddenly the landscape is filled with orange, gold, red, and every shade in between. It’s one of those transformations that happens every year, yet somehow still manages to surprise me. Maybe that’s because autumn doesn’t ask for our attention. It simply puts on its colors and carries on.
I’ve always loved this time of year. I love the cool mornings, the sound of leaves beneath my feet, and the way sunlight filters through a canopy that looks completely different from the one that was there just a few weeks before. There’s something about walking through the woods in October that makes me slow down without even realizing I’m doing it. And lately, I’ve found myself thinking about what those trees are actually doing. They’re letting go.
Nature Doesn’t Hold On Forever
By the time autumn reaches its most beautiful moment, the trees are already preparing for what comes next. The leaves we admire for their brilliant colors aren’t meant to stay. They’ll hang there for a little while, glowing in the afternoon sun, and then one by one they’ll fall.
There is something wonderfully uncomplicated about the way nature handles change. The tree doesn’t seem to worry about whether another leaf will grow. It doesn’t try to hold onto October because it was beautiful. It simply moves into the next season. We aren’t always quite as good at that.
We keep things because someday we might need them. We hold onto unfinished projects because we’ve already invested time in them. We continue routines that no longer work simply because they’re familiar. Sometimes we even carry expectations for ourselves that belonged to an entirely different season of our lives. Maybe that’s why autumn feels like such a gentle reminder. Not everything has to come with us.
Your Autumn Moment
Reflection Prompt: If you could let go of just one thing this autumn to make room for more peace, joy, or creativity in your life, what would it be?

Making Room for Something New
I see this in my creative life, too. If you could see my collection of unfinished projects, supplies, sketches, photographs, ideas scribbled on pieces of paper, and things I’ve saved because I might make something with that someday, you’d know I’m certainly not suggesting I’ve mastered the art of letting go.
Creative people can be particularly good at seeing possibility in everything.
That scrap of wood could become a sign. That photograph might inspire a painting. That ribbon could be perfect for an ornament. And I’m fairly certain every crafter has at least one container filled with things that make absolutely no sense to anyone else but have somehow been deemed too useful to throw away. Sometimes those possibilities become wonderful things. Other times, they simply take up space.
I’ve been learning that making room doesn’t always mean giving something up. Sometimes it means creating space for what’s trying to come next.
Before You Go…
Creativity has seasons, too.
There are times when ideas seem to arrive faster than I can make them. My worktable becomes crowded, one project leads to another, and I find myself thinking about the next piece before I’ve finished the one in front of me.
Then there are quieter seasons. Those used to bother me more than they do now. I would wonder why I wasn’t feeling
With gratitude, Nancy
