The Chair That Waits for Me
Every studio has a favorite chair. Not because it’s the newest or the most comfortable, but because it has quietly become part of the creative process. Mine has watched countless ideas come to life.
It’s been there on the mornings when inspiration arrived before my coffee had a chance to cool. It’s been there on afternoons when nothing seemed to work, when paint colors refused to cooperate, when photographs didn’t tell the story I hoped they would, and when projects were gently tucked away to be revisited another day.
It has also been there for the quiet victories. The moments when I leaned back, smiled to myself, and knew a piece was finally finished.
If that chair could speak, I imagine it would tell stories of laughter, frustration, tiny discoveries, and the simple joy that comes from making something with your own hands. It has witnessed unfinished canvases, scattered sketches, scraps of paper covered in ideas, and more than a few moments when I wondered if creativity had decided to take the day off.
But here’s what I’ve learned. Creativity doesn’t disappear. Sometimes it simply waits for us to sit down.
There is a temptation to believe we need to feel inspired before we begin. We wait for the perfect idea, the perfect mood, or the perfect amount of time. Yet most of my favorite creations didn’t begin with certainty. They began with a decision to pull out a chair, take a deep breath, and make the first brushstroke, write the first sentence, or arrange the first collection of materials on my worktable.
The magic wasn’t waiting somewhere else. It was waiting in the act of beginning.
That’s why I rarely walk past that chair without feeling a little grateful. It reminds me that creativity isn’t reserved for extraordinary days. It quietly lives in ordinary moments, patiently waiting for us to return.
And somehow, every time I sit down again, it feels as though it has been saving my place all along.
Creative Corner
Tonight, don’t worry about finishing something.
Simply sit in the place where you create.
Light a candle. Pour a cup of tea or coffee. Open a notebook, pick up a paintbrush, thread a needle, or gather whatever you love working with. Give yourself fifteen uninterrupted minutes.
Sometimes the hardest part of creating isn’t making something beautiful.
It’s remembering to take your seat.
Before You Go…
Thank you for pulling up a chair beside mine today.
Wherever your own creative space may be—a kitchen table, a corner of the living room, a workshop, or a favorite spot by the window—I hope you’ll return to it often. The world asks us to hurry, but creativity has always been patient.
Your place is still waiting for you.
With gratitude, Nancy
On My Worktable
“Every creative journey begins with one simple act: taking your seat.”
This week, my worktable is a little fuller than usual. There are photographs waiting to become prints, ideas for future journals scattered across a notebook, and a few projects that are still deciding what they want to be. I’ve learned not to rush them. Some creations need a little more time before they’re ready to introduce themselves.
