The Bench I Almost Walked Past
There is a small bench tucked into my backyard garden. I’ve walked past it more times than I can count.
When I first placed it there, I imagined it would become a quiet place to enjoy my morning coffee, admire the flowers, or simply rest for a while. But like so many things in life, good intentions were often replaced with busy schedules.
Most days, I’d walk by carrying tools, watering flowers, pulling weeds, or thinking about everything waiting for me inside the house. The bench became part of the scenery instead of the destination. Then one autumn afternoon, I stopped.
I don’t remember what made that day different. Maybe it was the crisp air. Maybe it was the sound of leaves drifting through the trees. Or maybe I was simply tired enough to finally give myself permission to sit. For the first few minutes, I did absolutely nothing. I watched a breeze move through the flowers. I listened to birds calling from the nearby trees. A single leaf spiraled gently to the ground, and for the first time in a long while, I wasn’t thinking about what came next. I was simply there.
That little bench hadn’t changed. The garden hadn’t changed. What changed was me.
Since then, that bench has become one of my favorite places. It’s where ideas quietly find me. It’s where photographs begin before I ever pick up my camera. It’s where new creations often take shape, not because I’m trying to be productive, but because I’ve finally become still enough to notice them.
I’ve learned that peace isn’t something we have to travel far to find. Sometimes it’s waiting just a few steps away, in a place we’ve walked past hundreds of times. All we have to do is sit down.
Your Autumn Moment
Reflection Prompt
If you could spend ten peaceful minutes anywhere, where would it be? the sweetest moments in life are found when we finally slow down enough to notice them.
🌿 Creative Corner
Create Your Own Quiet Corner
Every home has a place waiting to become a sanctuary. Maybe it’s a chair on the porch, a bench in the garden, a sunny window, or a favorite spot beneath a tree. This week, spend just ten minutes there without your phone or a to-do list. Simply notice what you’ve been missing.
