The Gift of the Unexpected
Some of my favorite photographs have never been planned.
I don’t set out on a hike expecting to find the perfect wildlife encounter or discover something extraordinary waiting around the next bend. In fact, I’ve learned that nature has a way of revealing its greatest treasures when I’m simply willing to slow down and pay attention.
One afternoon, I found myself walking alongside a field of corn with my camera in hand. It was one of those peaceful days when there wasn’t any particular destination in mind. I was simply enjoying the fresh air, listening to the sounds of summer, and taking in the beauty that surrounded me.
Then, in an instant, everything changed. Out from the edge of the cornfield stepped an unexpected visitor.
For just a brief moment, we shared the same space. Neither of us had planned the encounter, yet somehow it felt as though nature had quietly invited me into one of its private moments. My camera was already in my hands, and instinct took over. I raised it, focused, and captured the image before my visitor disappeared just as quickly as it had appeared. It all happened within seconds. Moments like that can’t be scheduled. They can’t be recreated or repeated. They are gifts.
That experience reminded me that some of life’s greatest blessings arrive when we’re not searching for them at all. We spend so much of our lives planning, organizing, and looking ahead that we sometimes miss the quiet surprises waiting right beside us. Nature has taught me to expect the unexpected. Whether it’s a deer stepping onto the trail, an eagle soaring overhead, or a single wildflower growing where no one thought it could, these moments remind me that beauty often appears without announcement. All we have to do is be present enough to notice it.
Looking back, I’m grateful that my camera was ready that afternoon. More importantly, I’m grateful that I was. Sometimes the greatest gift isn’t the photograph we bring home. It’s the reminder that life is still full of wonderful surprises for those who take the time to look.
Creative Corner
The next time you head outside, leave your expectations behind. Rather than searching for a particular photograph, bird, flower, or perfect view, simply allow yourself to observe whatever crosses your path.
Bring your camera if you have one, but don’t worry about capturing the perfect image. Instead, practice noticing the little surprises that often go unseen—a butterfly resting nearby, sunlight dancing through the leaves, or an unexpected visitor appearing when you least expect it.
Sometimes creativity begins not with finding what we’re looking for, but by appreciating what finds us.

Through My Lens
Nature’s greatest surprises are reserved for those who slow down enough to notice.
This photograph reminds me why I always carry my camera on my walks. I wasn’t searching for wildlife that afternoon, and I certainly wasn’t expecting such a special encounter beside a quiet cornfield. Yet for a few unforgettable seconds, nature offered me a gift I could never have planned. Every time I look at this image, I’m reminded that the world is filled with unexpected moments of wonder. All we have to do is keep our eyes open and our hearts ready to receive them.
