Just Beyond My Back Door

There are a few things I always hope to see when I head outside with my camera. An eagle has always been near the top of that list.

I’ve caught glimpses over the years, a distant silhouette soaring overhead, a flash of white through the trees, or a fleeting moment before it disappeared beyond the horizon. They never seemed to stay long enough for more than a memory.

So when I looked out toward the field behind my house one quiet morning and saw an eagle perched in the grass, I almost couldn’t believe it. Nature had offered me a gift I had been hoping for, and it was waiting just beyond my back door.

I quietly gathered my camera and stepped outside, careful not to disturb the moment. The eagle had found lunch in the field and lingered longer than I ever expected, giving me the rare opportunity to simply watch.

I wasn’t thinking about the perfect photograph anymore. I was thinking about how incredible it felt just to witness such a magnificent bird so close to home.

Frame after frame, I captured images I had dreamed of taking. But somewhere between pressing the shutter and lowering my camera, I realized the photographs weren’t the only treasure I would carry away that morning.

The experience itself had become the gift. It made me wonder how often we spend our lives believing the extraordinary is somewhere else.

Another vacation.

Another hiking trail.

Another season.

Another day.

Meanwhile, beauty quietly waits in the places we know so well that we’ve stopped expecting to be surprised. That field behind my house hadn’t changed overnight. It had always been there. The difference was that, on that particular morning, I happened to be paying attention.

Photography has taught me many things over the years, but perhaps the greatest lesson is this: beautiful moments can’t always be planned. They often arrive unexpectedly, rewarding patience more than preparation.

The same is true in life.

Sometimes we’re so busy looking ahead that we forget to notice what’s already around us, the morning light spilling across the kitchen table, birds gathering outside the window, the quiet colors of a sunset, or a familiar path that suddenly reveals something we’ve never seen before.

That eagle reminded me that wonder doesn’t always require traveling somewhere extraordinary. Sometimes it simply asks us to look a little closer at the ordinary places we call home. The photographs from that afternoon will always be among my favorites. Some may even inspire future paintings hanging in the gallery. But long before they became artwork, they became something even more valuable.

A reminder that the world is full of remarkable moments. Sometimes they’re waiting just beyond our back door.
