Hi my name is Nancy and I am a Writer, Artist, Entrepreneur and Social Media Marketing Enthusiast.
What is the Creative Industry?
For those who are not familiar with the creative industries here is a short introduction. There are many definitions explaining the creative industry, but my favorite one is the United Kingdom’s version which states that creative industries are “those industries that are based on individual creativity, skill and talent with the potential to create wealth and jobs through developing intellectual property” (2014). In short, the creative industry includes anyone who creates products/services/entertainment for the enjoyment of others. From the movies that entertain us to the programmers designing our websites, the creative industry is part of our culture and is “creating” their mark on the global economy.
From my early years of quilting with my mom to creating home décor items, being creative has always been at the forefront of my life. For me, wherever there is an opportunity to be creative, there is an opportunity for a vision. I am mostly self-taught in all my crafting activities.
Photography was my first creative passion and still is my favorite. There is nothing more magical than capturing the world around you and preserving it for generations to come.
Owing a family day care home guided my way into adding various arts and crafts to my passion list. Painting with the kids enrolled in my care made me realize how one could be limitless in creativity with a brush and canvas (or any surface). I began teaching myself various techniques in painting and applied them to different surfaces. In addition to painting on canvas, I paint on slate, word, stone and any other surface that could use a creative touch.
As my daughters grew, daycare was replaced with craft shows. I have been selling at local craft shows for nearly 10 years and officially created my crafting business, Nancy’s Crafting Nook, in early 2014. Although craft shows will continue to be my primary outlet for sales, a traditional country shop is in future plans. As for now my focus is to grow my online shop to be part of the global creative economy.
Why a Blog?
As I mentioned, I also have a passion for writing. Although it is making great strides, the creative industry is one of the less followed and even less pursued. Most crafters begin selling their creations as a way to earn some extra cash and have successfully grown into a sustainable business. It is my desire to create a platform where creative individuals, from beginner to expert, can find valuable resources to guide them on their journey. A platform where we can network together and learn from each other to bring awareness and growth to one of the most valuable industries in this global economy.
Most of all it is my desire to encourage and inspire others to experience their creative side and open the possibilities of where it can lead them. I hope everyone finds both value and enjoyment in the content of this blog.
Creativity is the spark that builds empires!
